Standard poker rules introduced by FIDPA
28th July, 2008
An association created by poker professionals, the Federation of Internationale de Poker Association, has begun developing uniform standards and rules for the international poker community
“As poker has exploded, the beauty of having one set of rules that everyone can learn and follow is such a big step for the game and as a sport,” said Marcel Luske, professional poker player.
The idea is that when players go to other countries and play poker, there’s no guarantee the rules will be the same, but with a standardized set of rules, everyone knows what to expect when they enter a casino – no matter where they are in the world.
“A standardized set of rules are desperately needed, as a professional poker player travelling around the world to play in tournaments, there is absolutely no way to know the different rules in every country or even from venue to venue,” said Michelle Lau, professional poker player. “By allowing tournament directors to make and disclose any necessary modifications prior to a tournament, we can now know the rules, simply not the changes and be able to ensure the rulings are made are fairly.”
Bellagio was the first card room to be endorsed be the FIDPA, which promotes the IP rules. These rules are a collection of 80 technical standards of tournament poker play including rules, etiquette and other important policies.
“We have a large number of international poker players who compete in our tournaments on a regular basis,” said Jack McClelland, Bellagio’s director of tournaments. “We want to make sure they are comfortable with the rules and hope to maintain consistency in rulings worldwide.”
