Controversy for WPT Ladies Championship
14th April, 2008
The newly-launched World Poker Tour Ladies Championship (WPT Ladies) has become embroiled in a charity donation scandal.
Event organisers decided to siphon off 15 per cent of the total prize pool in order to issue a donation to Susan G Komen for the Cure, an American breast cancer charity.
While none of the players has questioned the noble intentions of that agreement, one leading figure has said the modest $1,500 (£750) tournament buy-in makes such a give-away unviable.
"As a working player who would gladly have donated five per cent of any win I may have taken, I am very disappointed that this event is no longer on my schedule," said former World Series of Poker Ladies Event champion Susie Isaacs.
Writing on her blog, she added: "With the 15 per cent and the juice I don't believe it is playable from a financial point of view."
The buy-in for the WTP Ladies is utterly dwarfed by that of the main event, for which women are also eligible to enter but which sets them back a hefty $25,000.
